Description

Number 180 of the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg became the 51st vessel of the fleet of shipowner R.F. Laeisz, of Hamburg. Surpassing commercial speed records, this firm, in which the names of all the ships becan with a P, except for a few exceptions at the beginning, has become world famous under the name “Flying P. Line”.

Costing approximately 850,000 Deutsche Marks in 1905, the Pamir was a four-masted barque of 3020 tons and a payload of 4425 tonnes. In her day she sailed with a crew of 33 men.

Until 1914 she transported nitrate from South America to Europe. After the First World War, until 1939, the Pamir transported wheat from the south of Australia to British ports. During the Second World War, as a prize under the Australian and then New Zealand colors, she sailed the Wellington-San Fransisco route. Her beauty saw her spared by the commander of a Japanese submarine.

In at this time the West German Merchant Marines was re-established and the decision was taken to put the two vessels back into service as training vessels. From 1951, modernized and fitted with an auxiliary motor, they served on the Rio de la Plata route, training cadets.

The Pamir was lost during a storm in the Atlantic in 1957.

Models & Model Kits are supplied unpainted and unassembled unless otherwise noted.
