People here just call it ‘the old watchtower.’
To the shepherds and merchants who pass by, it’s nothing more than a landmark. Young lovers sneak away to carve their names on the weathered stone walls. Among the locals, the structure is widely believed to have been the military outpost of some forgotten duke.
It was not.
Hidden beneath the ruined watchtower is a dark relic from a forgotten age.
Underneath the Ruined Watchtower of Some Forgotten Duke is intended to be an early adventure for a party of 1st and 2nd level characters. It’s a little more open-ended than my other locations. There’s a halfling mercenary group squatting in the tower aboveground that can provide a mixed source of information and antagonism to the PCs, maybe even becoming an ally although none of my groups ever managed it. Beneath the tower is a small but strange old ruin filled with dark elf weirdness, unknowable devices, and zombified bureaucrats protecting a really strange creature on the bottom floor that may end up becoming an ally to the PCs. This is a great adventure to link to other underground locations. Most groups complete the adventure in a single long session, sometimes two.
